CANM8-USA : Rear Lights Conversion For American Vehicles

CANM8-USA provides an easy solution to converting the rear lights of American imported vehicles which feature the CAN Bus signalling system. The interface supplies conventional 12v outputs driven from the CAN system, allowing the rear lights configuration of the vehicle to be adapted to conform with UK legislation. The outputs from the interface can also be used to provide connection to towing electrics.

Installation

There are 2 connections between the interface and the vehicle CAN Bus wiring (CAN Hi & CAN Lo) along with a connection to a suitable permanent, main 12v power supply and an Earth connection.

The interface has four output wires which provide connection to the rear lights. These provide individual outputs for :

  • Rear Left & Right Indicators / Hazards
  • Brake Lights
  • Rear Side Lights

The Indicator & Brake outputs function completely independent of each other, overcoming the problem of combined operation, which is standard to many American vehicles. The Rear Side Lights output can additionally be used to provide a feed for a Rear Fog Light circuit. The interface also features a "Balancing Circuit" which maintains the correct flash rate of the indicator system even though the amount of lamps present on the circuit is reduced during conversion.

Towing Electrics

If required, towing electrics can also be connected to the outputs of the interface. An in-built load sensing circuit detects when additional lighting has been attached to the system and provides a warning output for an audible or visual device, which activates when the indicators are operated as required by UK law.
